Czechs in the lead
The Czech Republic reaches the highest internet penetration rate in Central and Eastern Europe, according to “Online Landscape: Central Europe”, a report recently published by Gemius.
In the Czech Republic, the internet penetration rate among population aged 18-69 reached 96 per cent, which ranks the country first among all the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries. For comparison, in the remaining V4 countries (the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia), the rate of internet penetration ranges between 65 and 75 per cent approximately and the average of the entire CEE region is 67per cent.
The traffic from mobile devices during the year 2013 on Czech websites involved in the research increased tenfold. In December 2013, 10 per cent of page views were generated from mobile phones and tablets, and in this area a constant growth is expected.
According to the study, there are 31 million internet users in the V4 countries. The Czech Republic, with 6.7 million users, is the second largest internet market in Central Europe after Poland. However, the Czech Republic achieved the highest rate of internet penetration (71 per cent) in V4 countries for all age categories (age 10+). The distribution of Czech internet users by gender is less equal than in other V4 countries - 52 per cent of users are male, while in other countries a slight predominance of women can be observed. The Czech Republic has also the highest proportion (17 per cent) of the oldest age group of users (age 55 +).
