Yandex turns 17
The Russia’s largest search engine is celebrating its seventeenth birthday. It is used by eight in every ten Russian online audience members, but Yandex is also popular in other countries. Which?
Back in 1997, two classmates set up an internet search engine. Now Yandex is the biggest website of this type in Russia, and it has gained many fans over these 17 years – not only Russians. How many internet users visit the website at present?
Only five years ago (June 2009), the most popular Russian search engine was used by 75 per cent of the online population, devoting on average 5 hours in a month.
Russians spending ever more time on Yandex.ru
Gemius analysts have studied the data on adult Russian online audience (June 2014). It turned out that Yandex.ru is now popular among 82 per cent of internet population in Russia. On average, they spend 7 hours a month on the search engine’s website, generating an average of 172 page views. In total, Yandex.ru records 10 bn. page views a month.

The website Yandex.ru offers other services on top of the search facilities. The most popular sections of the site are the mailbox, collections of pictures, maps and video content.
Yandex popular in Russian-speaking countries
Based on the data for June 2014, Gemius also checked the interest Yandex enjoyed in other countries where the research is conducted. It appears that the search engine is also popular in Belarus, where over a half of the local users visit Yandex.by (52 per cent). In Ukraine, similarly, Yandex.ua is entered by nearly half of the online population (45 per cent), and in Turkey - Yandex.com.tr is visited by 43 per cent of the internet users. The website Yandex.ru is also entered by individuals in Poland: they account for 3 per cent of the total online audience.
The research covered the European countries where websites of global reach are included in the project, i.e. Belarus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland, Russia, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine and Hungary. In order for data on a particular website users to be visible in the research, it must be visited by sufficient amount of researched persons in a month. This is why the data studied in the context of Yandex concerned Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and Belarus.
The data quoted originates from an international project (gemiusAudience) conducted by Gemius in more than 30 countries. It aims to research into the number and demographic profile of internet users and the manner in which they utilize the web. The study is performed according to Gemius proprietary hybrid methodology and in accordance with the ICC/ESOMAR international code of conduct.
