Who are the Russian internet users?
Among the adult Russian internet population the prevailing groups are women, individuals younger than 35 and inhabitants of the western federal districts of Russia. Over one-third of Russian internet users have vocational education – an analysis made by Gemius suggests (July 2014).
The research shows that every fourth member of online audience in Poland is between 25 and 34 years old. Also one in four internet user declares secondary education, and one in five – higher. So what are the characteristics of the Russian users?
Runet feminised
The population of adult users in the Russian domain of the network, called ‘runet’, is over 70 m individuals. In this group, women amount to 37.6 million (54 per cent of the online audience). Men are fewer by over 5 million (32.5 m).
More than half internet users are below 35 years old
Furthermore, the research project gemiusAudience shows that every third Russian internet user falls in the age group between 25 and 34 (21 m persons). One in five runet users is between 18 and 24 years old (14.9 m) or from 35 to 44 years old (15.3 m), while every sixth is 45 to 54 (11.1 m). The least numerous group to visit the Russian-language websites were older than 55 (over 7.6 m).

Most runet users live in western Russia
The population in the Russian territory is distributed in a most uneven manner. A majority of runet users come from the Central Federal District (19.8 m, out of which 7.3 m in Moscow), and every sixth user of the Russian-speaking internet live in the Volga Federal District (11 m) or in the Northwestern Federal District (10 m).
Vocational school graduates most prevalent
The runet population is also diversified in terms of the level of education. More than one-third of them are vocational school graduates (25 m), slightly fewer hold higher education diplomas (22 m). Over a quarter of Russian internet users have secondary education (18.5 m). Among Russian online audience, the smallest groups are persons who have not yet finished their academic training (3 m) or secondary school (1.4 m).
The data quoted originates from an international project (gemiusAudience) conducted by Gemius in more than 30 countries. It aims to research into the number and demographic profile of internet users and the manner in which they utilize the web. The study is performed according to Gemius proprietary hybrid methodology and in accordance with the ICC/ESOMAR international code of conduct.
