Virtual navigation replaces compass

Over 10 m Polish internet users uses online maps and localization apps. In May they broke the popularity record. Most frequent choice are the Google’s services. Have Poles discarded compasses for good?

Gemius has analyzed traffic on websites offering online maps, address search tools or localization of companies. It turns out that Poles appreciate the benefits of online city maps and localization tools. In May, as many as 10.5 m persons used them. This is 8 per cent more than last year (9.8 m) and a 30 per cent increase compared to four years ago (8.1 m). Over the last year, online maps and localization enjoyed greatest popularity between January and September 2012. On the other hand, the lowest traffic on such websites was recorded in December (7.8 m).

The most popular websites where internet users can browse maps and localize places, same as last year, were the Google Group’s services (7.3 m), Zumi.pl (4.4 m) and Targeo.pl (1.8 m).

Gemius also checked the socio-demographic profile of the internet users who visit these websites. It was found that they are mostly 25 to 34 years old (3 m) and hold secondary education (2.7 m). The largest group of persons using online maps and localization tools came from the Masovian Voivodeship (1.8 m).

The data quoted originates from an international project (gemiusAudience) conducted by Gemius in more than 30 countries. It aims to research into the number and demographic profile of internet users and the manner in which they utilize the web. The study is perfomed according to Gemius proprietary hybrid methodology and in accordance with the ICC/ESOMAR international code of conduct.
