#Euro2020 Traffic analysis on the most popular sports portals in Poland and Turkey

The long-awaited Euro 2020 gathered a crowd of football fans in front of TV screens. Sports portals, offering news from the pitch and training sessions, as well as online streaming, were equally popular. Gemius analysts chose two countries and then examined the movement and activity of fans on the most popular online sports website in each of them. How was the audience's interest in content shaped in the period from June 9 to 16, compared to the same time in May?

Poland – June 9-16 results

One of the most popular online sports services in May and June in Poland was WP SportoweFakty, belonging to the Wirtualna Polska Group. In the period from June 9-16, the number of real users who used the portal amounted to 6,667,110, with reach of 20.06% and over 77 million views of materials on the portal. The chart clearly shows an increase in interest in the website around June 12-13 - two days before the first match between Poles and Slovakia. The highest number of real users visited WP SportoweFakty on June 14. The average time spent on the portal (ATS) was almost 12 minutes.

Paying attention to the range, it is clear that from June 9 it was gradually increasing (also after June 14, the day of the first match). The largest number of users visited the portal once, twice or three times a day. However, the greater number of daily pageviews among users is equally stable and with an upward trend, as shown in the chart below.

Poland – May 9-16 results

How was the number of users and their engagement in the same period in May? The number of real users who used the portal amounted to 4,473,306 (-32.9% by June) with reach of 13.46% and only 47 million views of materials on the portal. The average time spent on the portal (ATS) is comparable to period analyzed in June. The increase in range building is similar to June 9-16. We also see a gradual increase in coverage in May.

Most popular users

The majority of men over women is visible among the users of the portal in the period of June 9-16. The recipients of the portal are in 58.44% - men and in 41.56% - women. However, the representation of the latter group is greater than in the corresponding period in May. It can therefore be concluded that the ladies, like the gentlemen, are also interested in Euro2020 games and follow the news on sports websites. WP SportoweFakty portal in the week of June 9-16 was the most popular among men aged 30-49. It is also worth paying attention to the considerable interest (comparable among women and men) in the age group 60-64).

In the period between May 9-16, the disproportion between men and women increases. Among all real users, men constituted 65.41% and women only 34.59%.

In the case of the distribution of coverage into individual age groups, the situation is similar to the data obtained for June 9-16. In the period of May 9-16, the most popular group of recipients of the portal was also the group of 30-49 years, with a noticeable increase in interest in the group 60-64. This allows us to draw the thesis that regardless of the period of time, the age of the real users most interested in the portal does not change, or it does not change much.

Turkey - June 9-16 results

One of the most popular online sports sites in Turkey in May and June was aspor.com.tr, owned by Turkuvaz Medya. In the period from June 9-16, the number of real users who used the portal amounted to 748,800, reaching over 8 million views of materials on the portal. The average time spent on the site (ATS) was almost 3.5 minutes. The chart clearly shows an increase in interest in the website around June 11 (Turkey-Italy match) and June 14-15 - two days before the match between the Turkish national team and the Wales national team. The highest number of real users visited aspor.com.tr on June 15 (almost 154,000), generating almost a million views. The average time spent on the portal (ATS) was 2 minutes.

Analyzing the data on coverage in a similar scope, it is clearly visible that since June 9 it has been gradually increasing, reaching the highest value on June 16 (on the day of the match between Turkey and Wales). The largest number of users visited the portal once a day. However, the greater number of daily pageviews among users is equally stable and with an upward trend, as shown in the chart below.

Turkey - May 9-16 results

What was the number of users and how looked their engagement like in the same period in May? The number of real users who used the portal amounted to 1 055 600 (+ 40.97% by June) with reach of 1.8% and almost 11 million views of materials on the portal. The average time spent on the portal (ATS) was almost 4 minutes - it was twice as long as in the corresponding period in June. The chart shows a sharp increase in interest and audience in the middle of the month. The reasons can be found in an important event in the world of sports that took place in mid-May. UEFA decided that the Champions League final, which was scheduled to take place in Istanbul on May 29, was moved to Porto, Portugal. In May 2021, due to the lockdown in Turkey and the decision of the British government (Turkey on the list of countries with a mandatory quarantine after return, which also includes footballers), UEFA abandoned the organization of the final in Istanbul, heating up sports news portals and fans to red. The increase in range building is similar to the period June 9-16. Data for the period of May 9-16 show a significant increase in building reach among recipients.

Most popular users

Among the portal users in the period of June 9-16, a huge majority of male users is noticeable. The recipients of the portal are 93.3% men and only 6.7% women. The aspor.com.tr portal in the week of June 9-16 was the most popular among men aged 35-85. When analyzing the data from the same period in May, it can be noticed that the group of portal recipients practically does not change regardless of the circumstances.
