2008-08-09

The results of the analysis prove that the penetration rate in Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary is growing. However, it is still two times lower compared to the most advanced markets, for example Denmark.

The research company Gemius conducts the gemiusAudience study − the standard in online audience measurement across Central and Eastern Europe and in Israel. Working with the partners such as Mediaresearch in the Czech Republic and Ipsos Szonda in Hungary, Gemius provides data which let us define the development of the Internet on respective markets. In order to compare the progress of Web usage in Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary an analysis was done on the basis of the Top 100 web sites which were audited with site-centric in those countries by the number of real users.

From the time period of December 2007 and May 2008, the penetration rate in Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary has grown. The highest indicator of the Internet usage this year in May was noticed in the Czech Republic. According to Mediaresearch and Gemius it reached 54.60%. In Poland in May 2008 on the basis of MillwardBrown SMG/KRC survey Internet penetration accounted for 45%. As indicates gemius/Ipsos Audience measurement in Hungary it amounted to 40%.

By analysing the development of Internet penetration in the countries from the CEE region, we can try compare it to the most advanced Internet usage which is in Denmark. The findings from Gemius survey show that the penetration rate in this Scandinavian state reached 82.03% in May this year. This is up by nearly more than half compared to the above-mentioned countries from the CEE region.

When it comes to the time spent by a user on the analysed web pages, Internet users in the Czech Republic devoted more time to surfing the Web than the Polish, Danish or Hungarian ones. A web site visitor in the Czech Republic dedicated nearly 24 hours in May of this year. Poland came in second position with a result of 19 hours spent by a user. In Denmark there has been devoted 7 hours and 26 minutes per visitor and in Hungary – 6 hours and 15 minutes.

“The CEE region is becoming the limelight of the companies interested in investments in the Internet. Taking the analysis of gemiusAudience research in Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary into consideration the potential of the online market of those countries can be clearly observed” – adds Torsten Bruun, Regional Managing Director at Gemius Denmark.

“Although the penetration rate remains to be the highest in Denmark, which is one of the most advanced online markets in Europe, but taking into account page views per visitor and time spent by a user, the countries from Central and Eastern Europe do not lag behind” – explains Filip Pieczyński, International Operations Director at Gemius SA.

Studying page views per visitor for the top 100 audited web pages by real users in each country, in May 2008 the Czech Republic holds the victory palm with an average number of 1169 page views. Denmark took second position, having 642 page views. The results for Poland and Hungary were: 625 and 277 page views per visitor respectively done in May of this year.
