2008-07-07

A total of 83% of Internet users have watched TV or videos online and a minority declared that they do so every day. The Gemius report on media consumption reveals the popularity of Internet video and television in Latvia.

According to Gemius data, online video and TV have gained the mainstream of the Latvian Internet audience. Four out of five (83%) Latvian Internet users admitted that they have watched TV or video clips online. Radio and the daily press are slightly less popular – 74% and 67%, respectively, of the respondents have ever used them. Although the majority of Internet users enjoy video and TV online, a small percentage watch it every day (13%) and every third user watches it less frequently than once a month (33%).

As far as the popularity of TV and video clips online is concerned, YouTube.com is definitely the most popular web site with such content. As much as 60% of the Internet users who watched TV or video clips online at least once a month visited YouTube.com. However, the Latvian webpage Draugiem.lv also has a very strong position – it took second place (49%), ranking slightly lower than its worldwide known competitor. The third position was occupied by Tvnet.lv. This national site was mentioned by every fourth (26%) respondent.

Watching TV/video clips on the Internet depends first and foremost on age and varies significantly within the groups distinguished by this criterion. Generally, the younger the users are, the more video content attracts them on the Internet. To the question: “Have you ever watched TV/videos online?” a total of 93% of the users aged 15-24 answered positively, contrary to 76% of the respondents aged 35 and more. According to Gemius research, only in the case of Video.google.com was the tendency opposite and the web site is acknowledged more by the older users.
