Insight into the trends of the Hungarian Internet at the rankings.hu web site

2007-10-18

The aim of the rankings.hu web site, developed by Gemius, is to give a constant overview on the tendencies of Internet usage among Hungarian visitors. You can see how popular various operating systems, browsers, display settings and search engines are on the web site.

Rankings.hu offers information on the attractiveness of chosen technical parameters, but not only these. It provides the actual position of operating systems, browsers, used screen resolutions and color settings, as well as search engines and web directories. Furthermore, the system creates a ranking of those Hungarian counties and foreign countries where Internet users who visit Hungarian web sites participating in the research are located. You can also find information on the ratio of cookie-blocking – an important issue when it comes to creating personalized services or online ads. Thanks to cookies, web site owners can customize the content for their users and are able to set the capping when emitting creatives, saving the users’ patience and their own money. Last but not least, the rankings.hu web site contains data on the most frequently used search engines and search pages.

The rankings.hu service is based on the statistics of web sites participating in the gemiusTraffic study. gemiusTraffic, developed by Gemius SA, is a research tool designed to analyze how Internet users surf the monitored web site. At the moment, there are several hundred Hungarian publishers who are participating in the study, and their numbers are growing. The profile of the participating sites is very eclectic, from a national bank to a popular news portal. The methodology of gathering statistics is based on calculating cookies and page view numbers. There are over 400,000 web sites being monitored by gemiusTraffic on which users make more than 80 billion page views per month in all the countries where publishers use this site-centric tool. A further explanation of the methodology used at rankings.hu can be found on its web site.

Users can customize the graphs that visually represent changes in the statistics. They can decide which elements should be shown or hidden in the actual view (for example, the ranking of operating systems can be narrowed down to only Unix-based or Windows systems). The service is accessible in Hungarian, as well as in English, and a weekly newsletter is also available. The newsletter includes a top list of categories on a week by week basis. For those who are interested in CEE trends, rankings.hu’s main page has links to statistics from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine.
