RankingCEE.com – a mine of information about the Internet

2007-03-27
Operating systems, screen parameters, web browsers, search engines and web directories used by Internet visitors – this information not only shows great progress in computer technology used in a given country, but it also reveals trends related to Internet usage. All this information and even more can be obtained on the web site RankingCEE.com, which presents data about 6 Central and Eastern European countries: Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Czech Republic, and Ukraine.

According to the data from 13 to 19 of March 2007 the most often used operating systems in Lithuania (as well as in other countries being studied) belong to the family of Windows operating systems (it is used by 99,4% of Internet users), and only a very small part of Lithuanian Internet users (0.5%) has operating systems from the Unix family. Analyzing the popularity of different versions of Windows operating systems, it can be seen, that the Windows XP system undoubtedly prevails as it is used by approximately 91,3% of Lithuanian Internet users. The other two versions according to the popularity are Windows 2000 and Windows 98 (they are used by 3.6% and 3.2% of Internet users respectively). The Windows Vista operating system, which appeared in the market not so long ago, is owned only by 0.4% of Lithuanian Internet users.

It is hard to imagine how the usage of Internet resources would be possible without web browsers. At present in the European countries, participating in the study, there are three most popular web browser groups: MSIE (Microsoft Internet Explorer), Firefox, and Opera. The MSIE web browsers are used by the biggest share of Internet users from all countries being studied, however the biggest number of Internet visitors using them (approximately 80.1%) is in Lithuania. The most popular version of the MSIE browser in Lithuania is 6.x (it is owned by 64.9% of Internet users), versions 7.x (14%) and 5.x (1.2%) are also used. Firefox is the second group of browsers according to their popularity. Even though now in Lithuania the Firefox browsers are used only by a fairly small part of Internet users – 12.2%, their popularity is constantly (although slowly) growing (several years ago it was used almost by 4 times less Internet users). 6.8% of Lithuanian Internet visitors use the Opera web browsers.

The process of surfing on the Internet and finding information is facilitated by search engines. At present the variety of search engines is great but in Lithuania the most popular one is Google, which is used by the record number of Internet visitors (as many as 98.9%). An interesting fact is that even though the Google search engine is one of the most popular in other countries participating in the study, it is used by a considerably smaller part of Internet users in countries other than Lithuania: for example, in Poland – 83.9%, Ukraine – 57.6%, Estonia – 41.9%. Local search engines tend to be popular in these countries. A very small proportion of Lithuanian Internet visitors use the Yahoo (0.7%) and MSN (0.3%) search engines and the usage of the latter in other countries being studied is also insignificant.

Web directories which allow for seeking information according to different subjects are also very important means of searching information on the Internet. The most popular directories in Lithuania are Online.lt and Directory.google.com and they are used by 63.7% and 31.5% of Internet visitors respectively.

The data about screen parameters is also presented on the web site RankingCEE.com. The most popular screen resolution in Lithuania (used by 72.3% of Internet visitors) is 1024x768. Considerably less popular are the resolutions 1280x1024 (21.0%) and 800x600 (5.9%). The most frequently used color setting is 32 bits (89.4% of Internet users), much less popular color settings are 16 bits (7.4%) and 24 bits (2.8%).

The gemiusTraffic research study, which is the basis of the data presented on the RankingCEE.com web site, relies on the methodology of cookies, which allows for observing and studying the behavior of Internet users. It is worth mentioning that the level of cookie acceptance in Lithuania is rather high (as well as in other countries being studied) and reaches almost 99.4%.

Analyzing geographic location of Internet users who visit Lithuanian web sites, it can be observed that they are visited by Internet users not only from Lithuania but also from foreign countries. The biggest proportion of foreigners come from Great Britain (16.9% of all foreign Internet users visiting Lithuanian web sites), USA (14.1%), Germany (9.8%), Latvia (9.2%), Ireland (5.9%), and other countries.

On the RankingCEE.com web site the data on the Internet usage in various countries is presented and updated on a weekly basis, which makes it possible to observe changes in Internet usage in respect of time.
